When discussing the likelihood of Egypt becoming a gas exporter again rather than an importer, Eni's managing director for natural resources, Guido Brusco, pointed out that Egypt has placed 20 orders for LNG shipments between now and September, and it is unclear what will happen next.
"The situation may change, the country's demand may not expand as anticipated, or imports of gas to be liquefied at Egypt's LNG plants from neighboring countries may increase. We cannot rule out that a small number of batches may be shipped next winter, although of course it is not very likely,” he said.
Brusco added that Egypt's spare liquefaction capacity makes it a natural candidate to become a gas hub, but this will require the cooperation of numerous private and public partners. "It's a lengthy journey," he said.
Eni started providing gas to Tango, Congo's first floating LNG (FLNG) plant, in late 2023. Tango has an annual liquefaction capacity of roughly 1 billion cubic meters.
