Tesla sues EU over duties on electric cars produced in China

The Tesla Corporation's Shanghai division has initiated legal action against the European Union in the European Court of Justice. The company insists that the heightened tariffs placed on electric cars exported from China last year be declared illegal. The specifics of the legal case are not disclosed.

Consequently, Tesla has allied with various firms, such as the Chinese BYD, Geely, and SAIC, alongside German BMW, which also manufactures electric vehicles in China – all of these companies have previously initiated comparable legal actions.

Since October, besides the usual 10 percent tariff on all imported vehicles, the EU has implemented extra tariffs on electric car imports from China, ranging from 7.8 percent to 35.3 percent.

Electric cars produced by Tesla in China have a minimum rate of 7.8%. In 2023, this company's vehicles represented 28% of total Chinese electric car imports to the EU.
