Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have adopted amendments to the law that will allow certain categories of foreigners to obtain citizenship of the country. It was reported by the state news agency WAM.
According to the agency, investors, doctors, professionals, inventors, scientists, intellectuals, artists and their family members will be able to apply for citizenship. Applications for the UAE passport will be reviewed by the government and local executive offices.
"We have passed amendments to the law that allow granting of UAE citizenship to investors, talents in certain professions and professionals, including scientists, doctors, engineers, artists and writers, as well as their families. The new ordinance is aimed at attracting talented people who will contribute to our development," UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said on his Twitter page.
As noted by Bloomberg, the UAE is the first of the Gulf countries, which has formalized the process of granting citizenship to foreigners. Previously, the opportunity was given only in exceptional cases, for example, for work in the civil service.
This is due to the fact that the holders of citizenship of these countries enjoy the "generous privileges" of the state, said Bloomberg. At the same time, according to the agency, more than 80% of the population of the Emirates consists of citizens of other states.
