A total of 36 states - including Utah, North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa and Nebraska - as well as Washington, D.C., have joined the proceedings.

The US Department of Justice and several supporting states sued Google last year for abusing its dominant position in search advertising. In a later lawsuit, a group of states, led by Texas, focused on the company's anti-competitive behaviour in the online environment.
In addition, Google has also attracted the interest of the European Union's antitrust authorities. They are about to launch a formal investigation into the company's suspiciously lucrative digital advertising business.
