Ismail Haniyeh, the chief of the political bureau for the Palestinian Hamas movement, was assassinated in Tehran early on Wednesday morning, according to a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The message claims that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were slain during an attack on their Tehran home.

The event is being looked into, according to the IRGC, and the findings will be made public later.

Hamas verified Haniyeh's demise. Haniyeh died in a "treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran," according to Hamas.

Israel has not yet commented on the death.
