According to two sources of the publication, Washington together with Israel and the countries of the Persian Gulf plans to introduce a "flow" of restrictions against Tehran within 10 weeks remaining until the inauguration of Democrat Joe Biden. "The aim is to impose as many sanctions against Iran as possible before 20 January," said one of the interlocutors. A series of measures will increase pressure on the Islamic Republic and create obstacles for the Biden administration if it decides to return to the nuclear deal on Iran.

For example, the US Special Envoy for Iran, Elliott Abrams, arrived in Israel where he met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Adviser Meir Ben Shabbat to discuss the sanctions plan. He then went to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, which are "very concerned about the future policy of the Biden administration" towards Iran.

It is clarified that the planned sanctions are not related to the Iranian nuclear programme, as they are likely to be lifted by the Biden administration. The restrictions will relate to Iran's ballistic missile programme, assistance to terrorist organisations and human rights violations in that country.

On 7 November, Democratic Party candidate Biden won 290 votes with the required 270. Having secured his victory, he declared himself elected President of the USA. Trump, for his part, announced that the election was not officially over and that the results would be appealed in court.
