The choice to host the summit in the capital of China stems from the reason that Chinese President Xi Jinping is "unwilling to travel to Brussels."

Consequently, the newspaper reports that Costa and von der Leyen concurred that if they aim to engage with the Chinese leader, they ought to travel to Beijing.

The publication remarks that the meeting's date is still undecided, "yet the readiness of EU leaders to travel suggests genuine attempts to rekindle interactions with Beijing during a period when the bloc's ties with the United States have deteriorated" due to US President Donald Trump's tariffs on European products and his position on the Ukrainian situation.
