FT: Rapid ice melt accelerates geopolitical race in the Arctic

Last March, abnormally high air temperatures resulted in a record low for the Arctic ice area in 47 years of study. This was disclosed by the climate change monitoring service of the European initiative Copernicus.

As reported by the service, the extent of Arctic ice reached 14.5 million square kilometers in March 2025, representing a 6% decline compared to the average for this month from 1991 to 2020.

As reported by the Financial Times (FT), this scenario opens up chances for a “geopolitical competition” among various nations. A large portion of the Arctic area is anticipated to be devoid of ice in roughly ten years. Rebecca Pincus, the ex-director of the Woodrow Wilson Center's Institute for Polar Research, informed the newspaper that both military and commercial ships, particularly those from Russia, have experienced a significant rise in activity in the area.

"The period for navigation, when vessels can navigate through that area, is getting longer," she stated. The ice-free regions of the Barents Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk hold particular importance. Moreover, the Canadian Arctic and the western and eastern shores of Greenland saw “substantially above average” temperatures in March, as stated by Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus.
