“I profoundly regret the US choice to impose tariffs on European car exports. (...) We will now assess this announcement alongside other steps that the US intends to implement in the upcoming days," von der Leyen stated in a released comment.

She noted that the EU will “persist in pursuing a negotiated resolution” while “safeguarding its economic interests.”

Previously, Trump declared that he would implement a 25% tariff on all vehicles produced overseas.

"We will apply tariffs of 25%," he stated at the White House.

According to him, “this will result in our economic expansion,” along with foreign automakers establishing factories in the United States.

He indicated that the choice also pertains to small trucks.
