Google sued for £5bn in the UK

The U.K.'s Competition Appeal Tribunal has filed a lawsuit against Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., to claim over 5 billion pounds ($6.6 billion) in damages for its exploitation of a dominant position in the online search market to increase advertising costs.

The class action lawsuit submitted on Wednesday claims that the IT giant is exploiting its power to limit competing search engines, thereby solidifying its monopoly status and ensuring it remains the sole platform for online search advertising, according to CNBC.

The antitrust lawsuit was initiated by expert Or Brook representing British firms and organizations that advertised on Google's search engine from 1 January 2011 until the filing of the suit.

Local advertisers have few options other than using the platform to market their products and services, as stated by Brook in a release on Tuesday.

The lawsuit claims that the company implemented measures to reduce competition in the search market, such as partnering with smartphone manufacturers to pre-load Google Search and Chrome applications on Android devices, and paying Apple billions to ensure Google serves as the default search engine on its Safari browser.
