According to Bloomberg, a natural disaster might result from an increase in building in the Himalayas, an area that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi intends to develop.

The Himalayas are part of India's disputed border with China, and Modi views securing this frontier as a matter of national security. Furthermore, he plans to convert the Himalayas into a sustainable energy source by building hydroelectric power facilities on rivers that originate from mountain glaciers. Along with the construction of hydroelectric power facilities, the area is also seeing the construction of roads and trains, which are necessary to enhance communication with the rest of the state.

At that, the Himalayas' fragile soils and underground construction potential make construction a challenging task. For instance, hundreds of structures in Joshimath cracked in 2023, causing the authorities to relocate local residents. The old Narsingh Temple, one of the principal temples in the city, is also sinking underground.

Climate change and extensive construction in the region have raised the likelihood of disaster, according to Bloomberg. Scientists claim that Joshimath and other mountain towns are more vulnerable because of the added weight of modern infrastructure and the regular explosions that occur in the mountains to make place for roads and tunnels.
