Chery's facility in Turkish Samsun is expected to manufacture 200 thousand vehicles each year, according to a statement from the Turkish Ministry of Industry. Moreover, Chery intends to manufacture automotive parts at the facility.

The initiative also encompasses the establishment of a research and development facility, projected to generate 5,000 jobs.

The launch of the Chery plant will increase the footprint of Chinese car manufacturers in Turkey, which has a trade deal with the EU and is emerging as a key hub for their exports to Europe. Last year, BYD Co. revealed a proposal to construct a $1 billion plant in the nation.

The nation is a large market on its own, with electric vehicles comprising 11% of total new car sales in Turkey in the previous year.
