Borrel gave a press conference in which he and the European Commission jointly reported on the political, economic, and trade relations between the EU and Turkey, as required by the European Council. He clarified that this report refers to "a more general relationship with Turkey" rather than discussing Turkey's accession negotiations with the EU.
"This is about an important neighbour, a key partner and, let's also not forget, a candidate country for European Union membership, even if negotiations on this remain stalled," the diplomat stated.
According to Borrell, the report makes recommendations in a number of sectors, including energy, trade, investment, migration, connectivity, the environment, and the digital revolution. Visa liberalization is another topic of discussion.
Brussels suggests that negotiations on updating the EU-Turkey customs union begin as a first step.
