They agreed that EU member states would not allow mass resettlement of migrants from Afghanistan. The ministers agreed that the EU would also step up support for countries in Afghanistan's immediate neighbourhood.
"Timely security checks for evacuees from Afghanistan remain crucial," the statement said. The evacuation of European nationals and, to the extent possible, Afghan nationals who have cooperated with the EU and its Member States, as well as their families, has been prioritised and will continue.
"In this context, intensive work is underway to identify targeted solutions for the remaining specific individuals at risk in Afghanistan," the Interior Ministry heads decided.
The UK and the US have said they are ready to host tens of thousands of Afghans. The EU has ordered additional funding for those countries where the influx will be particularly high.
