“A clash between Boeing and Airbus would be absurd simply because our two industries are completely intertwined: we depend on each other for a number of components,” said Bruno Le Maire in his speech at the French Institute for International Relations.
"The commercial war between Boeing and Airbus will only play into the hands of COMAC," he added, citing Commercial Aircraft Corp of China Ltd.
COMAC could lead China to become a global player in civil aviation. In November, the company, together with the Russian United Aircraft Corp, presented a full-size model of the proposed wide-body long-haul aircraft, and in December the COMAC C919 passenger aircraft completed its first test flight.
Le Maire said that Europe has the means to retaliate against any US sanctions on goods from the EU, but added: "It is infinitely preferable that, together with our allies in the US, we find a way to compromise."
The European Union is preparing to respond to US subsidies for the Boeing aircraft manufacturing corporation.
