The European Union backs the Economic Community of West African States' (ECOWAS) attempts to end the Niger conflict, including the sanctions imposed by the group on the rebels. The German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, stated that the EU intends to implement comparable limitations.
"We express our utmost condemnation of the upturn," Baerbock said at a joint press conference with her counterpart of Senegal Aïssata Tall Sall, "and we welcome how strongly and united ECOWAS has responded to this crisis in Niger." From Baerbock's perspective, the European Union and Germany "support ECOWAS' two-perpective approach: diplomacy and pressure."
"We agree with ECOWAS's decision to impose sanctions in response," the German Foreign Minister stated, adding: "We as the European Union want to impose similar sanctions on the European side."
