On Tuesday, May 28, the governments of Norway, Spain, and Ireland formally acknowledged Palestine as an independent nation. The three nations stated, according to Reuters, that they were prepared to do every effort to bring about a truce in the Gaza Strip and that they hoped the other members of the EU would do the same.
"A Palestinian state that coexists peacefully and securely with Israel is the only viable solution for a peaceful future, and this is the only way to get closer to that goal," Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain, stated during a broadcast speech.
He declared that Spain would acknowledge the establishment of the Palestinian National Authority, which would have East Jerusalem as its capital, and would include the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Sanchez went on to say that unless all parties agree, Madrid will not accept any alterations to the pre-1967 borders.
