Sebastien Arbola, Engie’s executive vice president, stated, "The contribution of battery energy storage systems to the reliability and security of energy systems is becoming key with the growing share of renewables in the energy mix."
The battery park, whose building permission was issued in July 2023, will enable the system to store 800 MWh of energy and transmit it to the grid in four hours With 320 battery modules measuring 25 x 4 x 3 meters and an installed capacity of 200 MW on a 3.5 hectare plot.
96,000 families will be able to consume electricity thanks to the Engie initiative. Elia, the national grid operator, has already inked a 15-year contract with the battery park.
There will be two stages to the system's launch. First, 100 MW will be activated in September 2025; the remaining 100 MW will be added in January 2026. Engie is also working on two more comparable projects in Belgium called Drogenbos (80 MW/320 MWh) and Kallo (100 MW/400 MWh), for which permissions have previously been granted.
