The Swiss business Nestle Waters has been illicitly filtering tainted water and marketing it as "natural mineral water" since the 1990s, writes the French online site Mediapart.

According to experts, the company's actions over the last 15 years have created damage worth €3 billion. The corporation’s representative expressed their disagreement with both the numbers and the computation process.

A recent investigation claims that the company's French water sources were tainted, among other things, with pesticides, Escherichia coli, and fecal germs. Foodwatch, a consumer advocacy group, has urged that authorities hold Nestle responsible for breaking production rules and concealing information about it.

The firm informed the German newspaper Bild that Nestle Water Germany no longer sells mineral water in France and that consumers can safely consume all of the company's goods because their distinct composition matches what is stated on the label.

On July 24, the European Commission will provide a report on the case investigation. Current EU consumer standards state that naturally occurring mineral water must originate from subsurface sources that are shielded from pollution. A third of the beverage brands made by Nestle Waters' French branch were manufactured with infractions, according to the French media.
